my Burnys and a little information

This is my Burnys, from left to right-

1 :pre 1978 LS 70 3 piece top, 3 piece back, but very nice wood, a strange un shiny finish on top, and not very good hardware, old japanese pickups, not like VH1´s but they have their own sound. Stamped serial nr. on back of headstock.

2: a 1978 FLG 60 solid 2 piece cherry red top with some birdseye, 2 piece center seemed back. Everything but the name is Tokai, the pickups (all white bubbins), the hardware, the mounting on a print plate and the finish, double ring tokai style tuners. So it is a LS 60 reborn. 14 degree headstock angle. It seems to be a nitro finish. The colour has faded just like the real thing. It has a inked Tokai serial no. on the back 8000437, but sure it is a Burny!

3: Just got this one from japanguitars.uk, expensive but nice. It´s a 1980 FLG 150 or higher, solid flame bookmatched top and one piece back, nitro finish, neck joint medium like the Tokai-burny. stamped serial no. on headstock. Fernandes double ring tuners. Wired more like a Greco than a Burny, and I´m not shure the pickup´s are original , but the do sound good very much like the original PAF´s

4 and 5 : 2 1984-85 RLG 80 with solid tops with some curl and a little flame. 2 piece back. Black wire zebra VH1´s and nickel hardware, poly finish short neck joint, fretbinding. no serial no or other ID! gotoh single ring kluson replica tuners.

6and 7: 1994 RLG 90 with a flamed veneer. 3 piece back. Very strange colour -very cherry !! fretbinding serial nr. in backpickup cavity starting with 4. Gray wire zebra Vh1´s with original stickers on pickuprings. nickel hardware short neck joint. Gotoh kluson tuners. This is the most ugly, but best sounding of them all !!
1995 RLG 75 flamed veneer vintage sunburst, 3 piece back short neck joint no fretbinding serial no starting with 5 in backpickup c. open zebra VH1´s Gotoh Grover replica tuners

I hope this information can help You id your Burnys[/img]

Now that's a friggen Burny collection! Are all the neck profiles around the same? The neck on my Burny is medium to fat, which is what I like.

Hi and thanks for the comments.

They are all very different to play, all got different necks and they do sound very different to. You are right my favourite is nr. 3 because of it's beautiful solid wood and medium neck (and I have just bought it), but the one I gig with is number 2 the Tokai/Burny. It sounds fine though it got a "wrong" headstock angel and tokai humbuggers (not VH1´s), and it is very easy to play. The two new ones(6 and 7) got the fattest necks and I think that nr. 6 is the best sounding, played on relative low volume through my brown vibroverb with a 15 inch. JBL. The best screamers is nr.2 and 3 played on a cranked tweed pro amp or and old AC 30.

I posted these guitars because there are a lot of myths on the web concerning Burnys.
These Burnys got at least 4 different kind of pickups and they are all original. The resistance go from 7.1 to almost 9 and the materials (wires base plates screws magnets) are very different. There are 3 different kinds of neck joints, 4 different kind og tuners and 4 different kind of bridges and stop pieces. The body thickness very from 49,2 mm to 54,3 mm. The headstock decal on nr. 1 says Les Paul, on nr.2 and 3 It says nothing and on the rest it says Super Grade.

The funny thing is, that nr.3 is an exact copy of a 59 Les Paul nr. 9- 2xxx same body thickness, same neck and headstock thickness, same fingerboard exct. I know that Les Paul is in Japan, and it must have been around the Fujigen factory in 1980, but the top of the Burny is much nicer than the top of the original !!

I have played a lot of Les Pauls and I have owned an original 59 Paul many years ago. I sold it to one of my high school band mates because he could play those Clapton licks, better than I could at the time. In my opinion these Burnys sounds and play at least as god as any Gibson from the same period and a lot better than the new ones. I will say that nr.3 is just as good as an original 59 but a hell of a lot cheaper.

The high grade Burnys from FLG/FLG 120, 150 and 240 are expensive and very difficult to find even in Japan !!

Go for the ones made from 1978 to 1985 they have got the best wood. Go for the RLG 80 they got no flames but they have solid tops and 2 piece backs and are still cheap compared to Tokais and Grecos. Now on Ebay there is an 1978 FLG 60 like mine nr. 2, and it is in fact a Tokai LS 60 reborn, but because the headstock says Burny it is 400 $ cheaper !!

Great post NMB

Very interesting to hear your opinion on the Burny V a 59 GLP, not many people have had the opportunity to play a real 59 LP so it is nice to hear an opinion from someone who has.

If you see anything on the Japanaxe website that needs a correction or addition to better explain Burny guitars feel free to let me know

Amazing collection, you do realise that in my competitive compulsive nature I have to get more and more and more. :) The one on the far right is my favourite.

lots of clown burst goin' on there................and what is that you mention about 4 & 5 as being RLG 80 models?

I used to think there was a RLG80 model, because that's what all of the Japanese sellers were calling them BUT I believe the model is actually RLG-50

What do you think?

I've heard talk f this clown burst, would you say the centre and third from right guitar are bigger clowns than the others? Beside the big red nose does having a harsher transition between red to yellow mean the greater ability to throw pies in the face?
